Choosing the Right Material

Simplifying Your Material Choices for Optimal Results

Selecting the right material is crucial for the success of your 3D printing project. While there are numerous materials available across various 3D printing technologies, we at Norra Additive Manufacturing focus on providing you with the best options to meet your specific needs without overwhelming you with choices.

We prioritize simplicity and effectiveness by focusing on mainly two key materials: PA12 and TPU.

However, we recognize the vast array of materials available in the 3D printing industry and are here to help you navigate your options.

Materials by Technology

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

At Norra AM, we specialize in two core materials for MJF and SLS to keep your decision-making process simple and straightforward:

PA12 (Nylon): A strong and durable material ideal for a wide range of applications, from functional prototypes to end-use parts. It offers excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance.

TPU: A flexible material perfect for parts that require elasticity and durability, such as gaskets, seals, and wearable devices.

Other Available Materials in the Industry:

PA11: A sustainable nylon alternative made from castor beans, offering good ductility and impact resistance, suitable for functional parts and prosthetics.

PA12/PA11 with Additives: Enhanced materials with additives such as glass beads, short carbon or glass fibers, or even aluminum for improved stiffness, thermal stability, and other specific properties.

Specialty Materials: Flame retardant, high-performance materials for applications requiring specific properties.

While we currently focus on PA12 and TPU, we can of course explore additional material options as needed to meet your specific requirements.

Stereolithography (SLA, MSLA, DLP)

SLA is known for producing high-resolution parts with excellent surface finishes. Here are some common materials used in SLA:

Standard Resins: Ideal for general-purpose applications, offering good detail and smooth surfaces.

Tough Resins: Suitable for functional prototypes that require impact resistance and durability.

Flexible Resins: Perfect for parts that need to bend and flex without breaking.

High-Temperature Resins: Used for parts that must withstand high temperatures without deforming.

Dental and Medical Resins: Biocompatible materials for medical devices and dental applications

If you need more specific information about the available SLA materials, feel free to ask us. Currently, we do not offer SLA services but are always open to discussing your needs.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

FDM is one of the most versatile 3D printing technologies, known for its wide range of material options and ease of use.

Common Materials:

PLA: A biodegradable plastic that is easy to print and ideal for prototypes and low-stress applications.

ABS: Known for its toughness and impact resistance, suitable for functional parts and tooling.

PETG: Combines the ease of printing of PLA with the durability of ABS, making it great for a wide range of applications.

TPU: A flexible filament used for parts that need to be elastic and durable.

High-Performance Polymers:

PEI, PEKK, PEEK: These high-performance materials offer excellent mechanical and thermal properties, used in demanding applications such as aerospace, medical, and industrial sectors.

There are many more materials available for FDM, including composites like PP-CF. The versatility of FDM means there is likely a material to suit almost any application.
